Ms S Kanczes Daly is involved in training in mentorship responsibilities of a large number of clinical staff within Knowsley. She is currently a member of the local health authority (PCT Board) and is working to improve the delivery of local services. Its aim is to develop new local primary care initiated services that will benefit the local community.

Dr Maassarani is a Sheffield Graduate originally from Liverpool who has been practising in Liverpool since February 2003. He has an interest in chronic disease management, minor surgery, and substance misuse and is currently setting up a Patient’s Community Participation Groups/Forums.

This is a group practice and the clinicians work closely together if a particular clinician is not available an appointment can be made to see any of the other clinicians.

Patients do not have to see the registered Doctor, but we still encourage patients to find the Doctor that they regard as their “usual clinician” and see them whenever possible.

Nurse Practitioners

Nurse practitioners are highly trained nurses who have undertaken a specific course of study at at least 1st degree (honours level) who have achieved further qualifications and skills, including skills not usually exercised by nurses such as physical examination. More recently nurse practitioners have undertaken special training and achieved qualifications which enable them to prescribe treatment for certain conditions. A nurse practitioner is therefore able to see patients with certain undiagnosed problems and is able to make an assessment of their healthcare needs, prescribe appropriate treatment and follow up as required. Some examples of common minor illnesses, ailments treated are: -
• Eye infections
• Ear infections
• Throat infection/tonsillitis
• Chest infections
• Urinary infection/cystitis
• Lung infection
• Sinusitis
• Treatment of sting bites and stings
• Constipation
• Abdominal pain
• Indigestion
• Painful periods
• Back pain

Nurse Practitioners can also request certain investigations if required such as: -

• Chest x-ray
• Heart Tracing (ECG)
• Limb x-rays
• Blood tests

And have the authority to refer to other health care professionals if necessary.

Nurse Clinician

Nurse clinicians have undertaken a course of study at master’s degree (MSc level) and make professional autonomous decisions for which they are solely responsible. Nurse clinicians are therefore appropriately trained to see patients who traditionally have been seen by a general practitioner.

As they can assess, diagnose, prescribe, request investigations and refer as necessary. They can also do home visits if required.

Modules of study

• Physical assessment/examination of all body systems across the life span
• Pharmacology (Drugs)
• Health and disease (physical, sociological, psychological and cultural aspects)
• Histopathology
• Epidemiology
• Research
• Legal and ethical issues

Nurse clinicians in general practice

• Manage a case load
• Assess, examine, diagnose and prescribe appropriate treatments
• Share care with colleagues within our work space or refer to a shared care with colleagues in more specialist areas
• Patients have opportunities to consult with primary care clinicians (nurse clinicians), GP or both.
• Nurse clinicians may become primary care providers for patients i.e. in the case of nurse led practices.
